Plague! Shadow of the Rat King

Plague! Shadow of the Rat King

"Plague is a RIOT! I can't remember the last time I had this much fun while reading! If you love dark British humor, you should stop whatever you're doing right now and start reading this story." ***** Thorn Greenwood, Royal Road

It is 1665. Wannabe actor Clive Hucklefish has come to London seeking fame and fortune. But his hopes are dashed by an infectious new contagion: actresses! Yes, the merry monarch, Charles II, has finally allowed women to play (with?) themselves on stage! With all the best parts taken, Clive joins a band of undertakers whose business is dying (in every sense), for the undertakers’ arch-nemesis, the Alchemist, will stop at nothing to see death ended forever!

But when Clive falls hopelessly in love with the Alchemist's daughter, Clive receives a timely summons from the furry godfather of all ratkind, with an offer he simply cannot refuse...

Based on the award-winning PLAGUE! The Musical, this #dark comedy is sure to prove infectious to lovers of #historical fiction #low fantasy #black humour and #coming-of-age #weak-to-strong #cozy #romantic #adventures!

WARNING! Symptoms include a nasty fetish for historical detail, absurd footnotes, and a tendency to break out into song mid-sentence! Past sufferers of C.J.Sansom, Terry Pratchett and Jonathan Stroud may have low immunity! May or may not prove satirical of more recent pandemic responses...

"If you have been secretly wishing that someone would find a lost Terry Pratchett novel tucked in a desk somewhere… tough luck there isn't one. Instead we have Plague! Shadow of the Rat King. We all type LOL, but how many time have you actually disrupted a coffee shop? Superb madcap fun!" ***** Bruce Friedrich, Royal Road

"If you're looking for well-written dark comedy along the lines of Blackadder, or maybe Johnathan L. Howard's Johannes Cabal series with a bit less less edge, you've found the right story! Packed to the gills with wit!" **** Fachefaucheaux, Royal Road

"Probably the best written story I've read on RR. Brimming with life and adventure." **** Bulbus, Royal Road

      • Author Bio - Matt Townend

        Matt Townend Fantasy Author

I started writing my first novel at 10. Now in my 40s, I am proud to say I am still writing it. smile But in the space in between I graduated from Oxford as a Teacher of English Language and Literature, taught in two differen countries and over 10 different schools, and founded my own education course provider company (Oxford English Masters - the company behind the OXDA English Learning platform you are reading this on). Along the way, through teaching others how to write, and being taught in turn, I overcame my own obstacles as a writer, and created the Pentact - 5 Acts and 10 beats with which to perfectly structure any story.

As a young playwright at university, I penned the award-winning Plague! The Musical which has been performed around the world, and, as a teacher, I have turned many of the classics of English literature including Frankenstein, Dracula and Animal Farm into interactive fiction (iNovels) as teaching tools in my ESL and literature classes. I recently adapted the musical into a novel - and Plague! Shadow of the Rat King will be my first full-length published novel, a historical fantasy comedy about the man who started the 1665 Great Plague! of London to save his dying business.

The aforementioned novel I started at 10 is now the upcoming God of Lies epic fantasy series, and the iNovels will soon be released too - the first being Frankenstein. I may even write a book about the Pentact to help other writers, and I am currently nearing completion of a new phonics system (Truphonics) to help young students better learn to read and spell (it's in Beta on this very website so you can try it out now!

So lots going on. Watch this space! (And do make an account so you can get the newsletter and all the latest news emailed to you automatically!)
